Many — probably most — behaviors leave no archaeological trace.

A person sucking a betel nut and discarding it on a forest floor leaves nothing for archaeologists to find thousands of years later.

Evidence that is created may not be preserved.

The conditions required for archaeological survival are specific and unusual.

Most organic materials decay completely within decades to centuries under most conditions.

Only under exceptional circumstances — permafrost, desert aridity, waterlogged anaerobic conditions, mineralization in limestone caves — do organic materials survive for thousands of years.
