The gap between the two specimens — more than 10,000 years — is itself interesting.

Between the older specimen at 16,000 to 25,000 years and the younger one at 6,300 to 7,600 years, there is a long stretch of time with no documented evidence of the practice.

This does not mean the practice stopped — it means the archaeological record for that period either hasn’t been found or doesn’t preserve evidence of it.

The karst cave deposits of South Sulawesi are incompletely excavated.
