Three partial genomes had been recovered from individuals at Abusir el-Meleq, a site in Middle Egypt — but these individuals dated to between 787 BCE and 23 CE, spanning the Third Intermediate Period through the Roman occupation.
They were ancient Egyptians, but they were late ancient Egyptians, separated from the formative period of Egyptian civilization by more than a thousand years.
