NUE001 was not a pyramid worker — he lived and was buried in Nuwayrat, far to the south of the Giza plateau.

But the organizational systems, the administrative apparatus, the agricultural surplus, and the religious ideology that made the pyramids possible also shaped his world.

The pharaoh who was building the great pyramid in NUE001’s lifetime — if the overlap was that close — was the same pharaoh whose administrative reach extended to the provincial towns and villages of Middle Egypt, collecting taxes, conscripting labor, and maintaining the cosmic order (Ma’at) on which all Egyptian prosperity was believed to depend.

NUE001 lived in the shadow of that order, in the most literal sense: the pharaonic state’s demands and provisions structured the rhythm of his agricultural year.
