Chapter 13 — Dinner at Seven

I have no memory of what I ate that night.

I know it was a steakhouse, and I know it was expensive, because everything Julian chose was expensive, and I know that I smiled and laughed and passed Lily her crayons and tasted the wine and told Julian it was wonderful.

It was, I think, the finest performance of my life.

I had spent years in rooms where the stakes were money and reputation, keeping my face unreadable while someone across the table lied to me, and every hour of that experience came to my aid now.
