“If you walk out that door,” she said, “I will never forgive you for humiliating me like this.” “Your forgiveness isn’t something I’m worried about today, Brenda,” I said, zipping the duffel.
And then she said the word that made everything, finally and completely, clear.
“I reshaped my whole life for you,” she cried, tears running now.
“I tolerated every deployment, every schedule change, every picture of Rebecca on the walls, and every single mood swing your daughter dragged into our house!” Tolerated.
That was the word.
Hannah and I had never, in two years, been people that Brenda loved.
