The central mystery of Mammoth Cave’s prehistoric human history is not that kind of mystery.

It is a mystery that the evidence cannot resolve, not because the evidence has not been found but because the evidence that could resolve it — the oral traditions, the ceremonial knowledge, the cultural context of the ancient mining communities — was not preserved in the cave.
