The recovery is not complete.

It cannot be complete — too much was lost in the catastrophe of the Apache Wars and the prisoner years, and the specific details of an individual life in an oral culture that was systematically suppressed cannot be reconstructed from the fragments that survive.

What exists is enough to understand the outlines of an extraordinary life and to ask the important questions: What did she contribute?

What did her community value in her?
