Some were individuals whose specific contributions were so embedded in the collective effort of the community that they did not emerge as individually named figures in the memory.

Some were people whose stories were lost in the specific catastrophes of disease, forced relocation, and cultural suppression that destroyed so much of the documentary heritage of Indigenous peoples.

The recovery of Lozen’s story is valuable not only in itself but as a demonstration of what was possible — of the specific caliber of individual that the Apache resistance produced, of the specific values that the Apache tradition recognized and honored, and of the price that was paid by the communities whose resistance was ultimately overcome.

The price was not only the loss of the specific people who died in battle or in captivity.
