“How can you know?”
“Because you aren’t crying over the wedding.” She looked at him. “You’re crying because you trusted someone who didn’t protect what you gave him.”
The words reached the part of her she’d been guarding all night. She covered her mouth. Eli looked away, offering privacy without leaving her alone. “I’m sorry,” he said.
“Don’t be. You’re right.” After a moment, she lowered the napkin. “You really are a dangerous waiter.”
“I’ve been told I overfill water glasses.”
Chapter 5 — Overtime
At eleven forty-five, Martin returned. His expression had softened, but his clipboard was still clutched against his chest. “Ms. Price, the ballroom rental ends at midnight.”
