“If you walk out of here tonight, don’t come back.”
“I’m not coming back,” I said.
She moved.
That surprised me at the time and it doesn’t now — she had been running that apartment on the certainty that nobody would ever actually go, and when somebody actually went, she had nothing.
I got us into the car.
I sat in the parking structure with the engine running and the heat on for about ninety seconds and I made myself stop shaking enough to drive.
