Mitchell laughed.
And Daisy, who was three years and eleven days old, put the bread back down on the board.
I saw her do it.
I saw a three-year-old work out from the laughter that she had done something wrong, and put food back, and then sit with her hands in her lap.
And what I did — and I have been over this so many times that it plays like a film I have seen too often — is that I leaned over and cut the bread into two pieces and put one on her plate and said, brightly, “There you go, monkey.”
