She stands in the middle of that living room in the afternoon light and she looks at it — she turns it over, the way you do with something you are appraising — and then she takes a cloth napkin off the dining table and wraps it, and puts it into the inside pocket of the handbag hanging on the back of the chair.
Then she picks up her phone and sits down on the sofa and starts scrolling.
Beatrice comes home at 3:40.
She goes down the hallway.
She comes back out at 3:52 and she is agitated and she says something and you cannot hear all of it because she is facing away, but you can hear “…my mother’s…” and then, clearly, “…where is it.”
And Brenda — sitting on that sofa, four feet from a handbag with a gold bracelet wrapped in a napkin inside it — says:
