She stood up straight, her posture composed in a way I had never quite seen in her, and she stepped out from the table with the box held in both hands in front of her, and she began to walk the length of that long dining room toward her step-grandmother.
Every aunt and uncle and cousin fell silent and watched her go.
No one interrupted.
No one reached out to stop her or smooth it over or turn it back into a nice brunch.
They watched a small girl cross a big room, and I think some of them understood, before Gene did, that they were watching something arrive that had been three years coming.
I have replayed that walk more times than I can count, those few seconds of my daughter crossing Gene’s dining room, because it was the bravest thing I have ever watched a person do and she was seven years old.
