The Survivors and Their Lives

Among the most important dimensions of the Sand Creek and Washita stories are the experiences of the survivors — the people who lived through both attacks and who had to rebuild their lives in the aftermath.

Medicine Woman Later, Black Kettle’s wife, is the most striking of these survivors.

She survived nine bullet wounds at Sand Creek.

She lived through the subsequent years of difficulty, traveling with her husband as he continued his diplomatic efforts.

She was killed at the Washita.
