They had thought grief made me powerless.

They had seen a widow in an old Army T-shirt and read it as a white flag.

They had tried to put me out in the cold, and they had never once looked hard enough to see the thing that was already on its way up the road toward them.

I looked down at my daughter, and she stirred, and for a moment her eyes opened and found my face, and I smiled at her — a real smile, all the way down.

We were home.
