Chapter 13 — Waiting for a Pulse

It took a long while for the old phone to wake.

The battery had been dead so long that for several minutes nothing happened at all, and I half hoped nothing would, because I did not know what I wanted more — to find something of them, or to be spared whatever finding it would cost.

That was the true shape of my hesitation, and I am not proud of it.

Part of me did not want the phone to wake.
