Two days before the deadline Sebastian had set, Santiago called him.

“Drive with me tomorrow,” he said.

“I’ll confess.

I want you there when I do it.

I can’t walk in alone.” And Sebastian, who wanted more than anything to believe that his brother would choose the right thing, believed him.

I know now how that morning began, because I lived the innocent half of it myself without understanding what I was seeing.

That morning, Santiago dropped Camila at her daycare, as he often did, and then he drove past the school where I taught and slowed, and I came out to the fence, and he blew me a kiss through the car window.
