While I waited, I could not stop myself from doing the thing I had spent six months priding myself on never doing.
I started to dig.
During my frantic search under the bed, a small object had tumbled out along with the suitcase, and now I picked it up: a slim leather notebook, well-worn, its cover soft from handling.
I opened it, and my stomach dropped further, because the inside looked exactly like the kind of thing my panicked, movie-fed brain was primed to find damning.
