She looked at the waves. I can’t. Graham immediately regretted his answer. But Lily smiled. I can see it. She pointed to the white foam curling along the shore.
I can feel it. She placed one hand against the wooden railing as the wind vibrated through it. Then she looked up at him. Water does not disappear because you cannot hear it.
Graham stared at her. His grandmother might have said the same thing. Perhaps she had, and he’d been too young to understand.
Nora had been offered a large settlement and a new home, but she initially refused both. “I don’t want charity,” she told Graham.
“It isn’t charity.”
“It feels like it.”
