The Hidden Compartment
And then the one that ended it.
**November 2021.** 02:14 on a Tuesday. I initiated an audit query against the Vance Veteran Initiative’s disbursement tree. Not a routine scan — a directed query, with three specific filters, exactly the kind of thing I would build if I suspected structuring.
At 02:25, I cancelled it.
Eleven minutes.
There is no record of what I saw. Cancelled queries don’t retain results. What exists is the query itself — the filters I chose, which are the filters of a person who already knew what she was looking for — and the cancellation, and then nothing for four hundred days.
I sat in a two-bedroom apartment in Alexandria at three in the morning and finally said the true sentence out loud to an empty room.
