Sophie started to speak, but I answered first. “I was her husband.”

Dr. Patel nodded carefully, as if he’d heard many complicated answers in hospital hallways. “She needs rest,” he said. “We were about to review her discharge plan, but I’d prefer someone stay with her for at least forty-eight hours.”

Sophie’s face tightened. “I have arrangements.”

His expression softened. “Your neighbor called this morning. She said she can’t come until tomorrow evening.”

Sophie looked down.

“I’m not comfortable releasing you to an empty apartment tonight,” Dr. Patel said gently.
