I did the right thing in the March and I did it in five minutes in a doorway with a colleague who behaved impeccably, and the only thing wrong with any of it was that no piece of paper existed, and that is four lines in a report and a letter in a file and a corridor in August.

The memorandum takes ninety seconds.

I have written eleven of them since and I will write one every time for the rest of my career, and I have been asked, once, by somebody junior, whether that is not slightly paranoid.

The paper is not there to prove you are honest.

It is there so that on the day somebody asks, you do not have to be believed.
