The court awarded monetary compensation of approximately $17.5 million, plus interest — totaling over $100 million.

The Sioux Nation has declined to accept the money.

Their position is that the Black Hills are not for sale, that money cannot compensate for the loss of sacred land, and that the legal obligation of the United States is to return the territory, not to pay for it.

The compensation money has sat in a trust fund for more than four decades, growing with interest to over $1 billion, unclaimed.

The land has not been returned.
