The Ledger I Finally Cleared
That was the thing I held onto.
Not everyone I was related to had been a transaction; the man beside me had reached for his wallet to give away everything he had left to save a woman he loved, and been robbed for the loving.
He and I were the two the family had counted on to keep paying, and we were walking out of that building together, and we would rebuild what could be rebuilt and grieve what couldn’t, and we would do it as two people who understood, now, the difference between the ones who give and the ones who only take.
Standing in the wet, bright parking lot with my father’s arm in mine, I felt the strangest thing move through me, and it took me a moment to name it, because I hadn’t felt it in so long.
