He served as one of the decoys who lured Captain William Fetterman’s force of 81 soldiers out of the fort.

The decoys rode into view of the fort, appeared to be just barely beyond reach, retreated slowly when pursued, and drew Fetterman’s command over the ridgeline and into the ambush that waited beyond.

Fetterman’s entire command was killed.

Fetterman had reportedly said he could ride through the entire Sioux Nation with 80 men.
