Some accounts describe the family traveling for two or three days with the body.

This would place the burial at some significant distance from Fort Robinson — perhaps sixty or eighty miles, depending on the direction and pace of travel.

The most cited specific account, which appears in various forms in the historical literature, involves the family traveling north from the Fort Robinson area and burying Crazy Horse somewhere in the vicinity of what is now the Pine Ridge Reservation or the adjacent areas of northwestern Nebraska.

A location on Pepper Creek, near the Nebraska-South Dakota line, has been suggested in some accounts.
