But the battle was won by the full effort of thousands of Marines who fought under terrible conditions against a Japanese force that had fortified the island with extraordinary thoroughness.
No single element of a military operation can be meaningfully isolated as the decisive factor in a sustained campaign of that complexity.
The Code Talkers’ contribution was real and significant.
