The text that appears in most accounts was not transcribed directly from Joseph’s spoken words in Nez Perce.

It was transmitted through interpreters, recorded by officers, and published in various forms — some more stylized than others.

Scholars have noted that the language of the published versions, particularly the most famous literary version, bears signs of editorial refinement that may not represent Joseph’s precise words as he spoke them.

This does not mean Joseph said nothing.
