Chapter 7 — Tomorrow Everything Changes

Sometime later Beckett came back to the bedroom.

I felt the mattress dip as he leaned over me, and then his lips, feather-light, against my forehead, and his breath, warm, at my ear.

“Tomorrow,” he whispered, “everything changes for us, sweetheart.”

I kept my eyes closed.

I kept my breathing slow and rhythmic, in and out, the performance of my life.

And behind my shut eyes, at last, the tears came — hot and silent, sliding sideways into the pillow where he could not see them.
