“What’s this?” Grace asked.
“A copy of my school registration form from yesterday,” Avery said quietly. “The counselor needed to update my file for the state. I put down my Aunt Sarah’s address in New Hampshire as my permanent residence.
Not here. Grandpa’s CPS worker is going to see it on Monday.”
Avery had just nuked her grandparents’ custody scheme from the inside.
Grace looked at the paper, then back at Avery, and the heavy lock inside her slid open a fraction. “Thank you.”
“I hope nobody ever makes you feel like you have to disappear again,” Avery whispered, before turning and walking out the door.
