The Note Nobody Read
We spoke for another twenty minutes, mostly about the children, whose names I had never used out loud before that conversation and did not use afterward.
At the end she said: “I don’t expect us to speak again.”
“No,” I said.
“I don’t think we will.”
“But I wanted it said out loud, by me, to you, once.”
We have not spoken since.
She sends a card at Christmas.
It says Evelyn and nothing else, and I keep them.
