I took my seat at the head of the table, in the chair Anthony had just been sitting in, and Elena stepped forward, and opened the leather folder, and laid its contents down in front of the assembled board: thirty pages of financial wire transfers, intercepted audio transcripts, and signed federal arrest warrants.

I watched the faces around that table as they understood, one by one, what they were looking at.

These were not stupid people.

They were lawyers and executives and elected officials, people who had spent their lives reading the room, and they read this one instantly: that the dying man they had gathered to bury was alive and standing at the head of the table, that his return was accompanied by federal agents, and that the folder in front of them contained the documented, recorded, signed proof of a conspiracy to murder him and steal his company.

There was no speech to make.
