The Room My Father Built
Go.
The house went black in a way that a house does not normally go black.
No standby lights.
No microwave clock.
The furnace stopping is a sound you don’t know you’re hearing until it isn’t there.
I went up the back stairs to the landing on the second floor.
At the end of that landing there is an oak armoire, eight feet high, that came out of a house in Bratenahl in 1974 and that my father bought at an estate auction for ninety dollars because he liked the hinges.
It does not stand against the wall.
