The Room My Father Built
He remembered the name of the board chair.
He made a joke about my father’s opinion of open-plan offices that was affectionate and accurate and that only somebody who had known Walter Voss could have made.
At one point he reached across the table and put his hand over mine and said, “You’ve been so far away.
I’ve missed you.”
And I looked at him and understood something that I have never been able to explain to anybody who has not been in it.
He was not performing.
