“At sunrise I drove to the hospital,” he continued. “Pierce said you weren’t there. Your phone was disconnected by noon.”
“I changed the number.”
“I know. I checked every hospital where you’d applied for residency. I went to your aunt’s house in Milwaukee. I hired people to search.”
“You had already hired people to follow me.”
“No.” The certainty in his voice made me pause. “The photographs—”
“My mother said they came from someone who was concerned about me.”
