Nita told me, years later, that she keeps it in the back of a textbook and that she has read it perhaps a hundred times.

She told me one sentence out of it, without being asked, in a car.

She said: “It says, you were the one who wasn’t watching.”

I said I did not understand.

And Nita said: “There were twenty people on that place and nineteen of them were watching.

I was the one who did something instead.

“She’s ten years old and she worked that out and I hadn’t.”
