He put the whole thing into the hands of the law and let it move at the law’s pace, by the law’s rules, even when that pace was maddening and those rules protected men who deserved no protection.

He did it because he understood that justice done outside the law is not justice at all, only power wearing justice as a mask, and that a man who takes the law into his own hands, however righteous his cause, becomes in the end a smaller version of the thing he is fighting.
