The Three Oak Trees
The people connected to me only by love showed up.
And in the ruins of that day I finally understood the thing that took a tragedy to teach me: that family is not who you are related to.
Family is who comes.
Family is who drives seven hours, who holds your shoulder so you do not fall, who weeps with you rather than scheduling around you.
Blood is an accident of birth.
Family is a choice, made and remade in the moments that actually cost something, and by that measure — the only measure that turned out to be true — I discovered at that funeral that I had far more family than I had ever known, and that almost none of it shared my name.
