Chapter 5 — The Text

Three days after we laid my husband and my children in the ground, my mother sent me a single text message.

Not a call.

Not a visit.

A text.

It read: I hope you are managing okay, but Sabrina feels really hurt that you forgot to call her on her birthday. I read it a fourth time, and a fifth, hunting for some hidden warmth in it, some sign that a mother was reaching, however clumsily, for a grieving daughter.

There was none.
