The Weight of a Small Thing
What I wanted was neither.
What I wanted was to genuinely set the thing down — not for his sake, not against him, but because I was leaving soon and I did not want the last thing in my hands to be a stone.
Real forgiveness, I have decided, is not a gift you hand the other person and it is not a verdict you withhold from them.
It is a thing you do entirely for yourself, in private, that happens to touch them: you open your hand, and you let the heavy thing fall, and you walk on lighter, and whether they deserve it never enters into it, because it was never actually about them.
It was about how you want to travel the rest of your road.
I wanted to travel mine with empty hands.
