Here is what I did not ask.
I did not ask what he had done for a living.
I did not ask how he had ended up on that pavement, which is the question everybody assumes I asked first.
I did not ask whether he had been married before.
I did not ask whether he had ever had children.
I did not ask where he was born or where he had lived or what his mother was called.
I did not ask him why he wanted it to be me.
