Chapter 9 — Lenora

Lenora Cardwell had been my best friend in college.

She was a corporate attorney now, specializing, as it happened, in estate fraud — and Devon had cut her out of my life three years ago so smoothly that I had blamed myself for the loss of her.

She listened in silence while I told her about the tracker, the burner, the tampered medication, the forged will, the car.

“We never had a falling out,” she said quietly when I finished, and the floor tilted again.

“Devon used to answer your phone and tell me you didn’t want to see me.
