The atmospheric ratio of carbon-14 to carbon-12 has not been perfectly constant over time, which is why raw radiocarbon dates need to be calibrated.
The calibration is done using records derived from tree rings, corals, lake sediment varves, and other sources that can be independently dated and whose carbon content can be measured year by year.
The result is a calibration curve that converts radiocarbon years into calendar years with appropriate uncertainty ranges.
Modern AMS radiocarbon dating — the method used for the Buhl burial in 1991 — requires only milligrams of material and measures carbon isotopes directly using particle accelerators.
