Then a highway district crew began quarrying gravel for road construction, and a right femur appeared in a rock crusher screen, and the discovery that followed opened a window — narrow, obstructed, scientifically uncertain, humanly vivid — onto the world she lived in.

The window is now mostly closed.

What was visible through it has been photographed, measured, analyzed, published, debated, and revised.

The bones themselves are gone from scientific access, interred in the earth on the Fort Hall Reservation by the people who claimed them as ancestral.
