“Can we go back upstairs after this?” Brooklyn asked, swallowing her milk.

“I want to see if the drawing is still on the window.”

“It’s still right where we left it,” I told her.

We finished our breakfast slowly, listening to the soft scrape of plastic utensils and the quiet hum of nurses talking about their weekend shifts three tables over.

Nobody rushed us, and nobody asked us to explain where we belonged.

We went back upstairs at one in the afternoon, and Brooklyn lay down on the fold-out couch in the family room with her thin blue hospital blanket.
