Thirty-Nine Million Dollars and a Brown Folder on the Kitchen Table

Inside were hundreds of white sheets, neatly divided by manila tabs.

I pulled out a file from seven years ago.

It was the invoice for a new baler belt.

The total was four hundred and twelve dollars, stamped PAID in red ink.

Next to it was a property tax receipt from three years ago.

Five thousand two hundred dollars.

Also stamped PAID.

I searched through the current year until I found the tractor repair file.
