Three Fireflies
My daughters had barely slept. For the first time in years they’d had clean beds, warm blankets, and windows that looked out on gardens instead of washing machines.
Lily was still clutching Richard’s jacket when the doorbell rang.
Richard answered it himself. A detective stepped forward. “Mrs. Emily Carter?”
My knees went weak. “I’m Emily.”
“We’ve received a complaint alleging grand theft, embezzlement, and unlawful removal of three minors.”
“They’re my daughters.”
