And then, before I could make the call, the smallest of the three woke up.
She didn’t cry.
She just opened her eyes and looked up at me with the unfocused, enormous seriousness that very small babies have, as though she were taking my measure and had all the time in the world to do it.
And she reached up out of the car seat with one impossibly small hand, and she closed her fingers around my finger, and she held on.
That was it.
