Trust the Training
The fields for his blood type and religious preference had been replaced with a long, seemingly random string of alphanumeric characters.
To a civilian — or even his mother’s highly paid investigators — it looked like a manufacturing error. To an intelligence officer trained in cryptology, it was a geographic coordinate layered with a substitution cipher.
I grabbed a legal pad and a pen. It took four hours, three cups of bitter black coffee, and a splitting headache, but slowly the cipher unraveled.
The coordinates didn’t lead to a military base or a hidden bunker. They led to a hyper-modern glass skyscraper deep in the financial district — the North American headquarters of the Helvetia Private Trust, a bank so exclusive it didn’t have a sign on the door.
Chapter 4 — Shadowbox
At nine the next morning I walked into the sterile marble lobby of the bank. I bypassed the tellers and approached the vault manager, a man in a bespoke suit who looked at my civilian clothes with polite disdain.
Without a word, I slid the legal pad with the decoded string across his pristine desk.
